Realmfront enters beta

Strategy that is easy to start, deep enough to keep you thinking, and played in rounds short enough for a busy day.

I have always loved strategy games that are easy to get into, full of variety, and balanced between picking them up for a quick match and slowly understanding the deeper systems behind them. Age of Empires and Warcraft III are my favourite examples and my biggest inspiration.

With Realmfront I want to bring that kind of strategy to phones, for people who have little time to learn a deep strategy game, and as a relaxed alternative to fast real time play. That is why it is round based: you plan, the round plays out, and you take your time with the next move. A mother or father can pick it up in a quiet moment, and a commuter can play a few quick rounds on the way to work.

Why a campaign first

On mobile I enjoyed Warcraft Rumble a lot, and I was disappointed to hear that it is now only in maintenance mode. It also taught me something: a good offline campaign still works today. From what I saw, its campaign was always highly regarded in the community.

So for now Realmfront focuses on playing against the computer in its campaign, and on playing offline with friends through Pass & Play on a single device. That is not to say there will never be an online mode.

In short, I tried to combine Warcraft Rumble and Age of Empires into a casual strategy game that gives you a short refuge during a busy day.

What the beta is for

With this beta I hope to get feedback on the core gameplay loop: building, upgrading, exploring the map and fighting. This is what the game is about, and I want to make it as enjoyable and fun as possible.

You can already play the demo in your browser on the Realmfront page. Start with the tutorial, then take on the campaign or sit down with friends for a match of Pass & Play.

What is not in it yet

The beta does not include all the content of the final game. Before the release I still want to add:

  • Meta progression and achievements.
  • More maps, monsters and campaign regions.
  • Polish for the texts, the gameplay and the presentation: sounds, vibration and effects.

After the release

I want to support Realmfront for a long time and keep creating content for it:

  • More campaign maps with new monsters, environments and challenges.
  • Events for Halloween, Christmas and other occasions.
  • More types of units, new game modes and much more.
  • Maybe even skins for your buildings and units.

And I want to build it together with the community. If you have ideas, feature requests or any other suggestions, feel free to write to me at info@maxdittmar.dev.

Price and platforms

Realmfront is planned as a premium offline game. That means it will most likely be pay to play, a one time price of course, somewhere between 5 and 10 dollars.

It is planned for iOS, Android and Steam on Windows, and there will be a web demo and a free map editor right here on this website.
